1. Does the Village of West Salem have “Alternate side parking”?

Answer: Yes, the Village of West Salem does enforce alternate side parking from November 1st – April 1st on all streets. Specifically the ordinance states: “6.05(D) Night Parking Alternate Sides of Street. Between 1:00a.m. - 6:00 a.m. vehicles shall be parked only on even numbered sides of streets on those nights with an even calendar date, and on odd numbered sides of streets on those nights with an odd calendar date from November 1 - April 1.”

Also note that cul de sacs are restricted as noted in ordinance “6.05(E) Night Parking cul de sacs.” Between l:00 a.m. and 6:00a.m. no vehicles shall be parked within the circular turn-around portion of any cul de sac from November l to April l.

Violation of either ordinance may result in an $15 parking ticket.

2. What vehicle registration/renewal services do you offer?

Answer: We offer basic title and registration services for cars, trucks registered as “A, B, or C”, and motorcycles. Fees include all DMV fees + a $19.50 counter fee. We also offer plate renewal services for the same types of vehicles. Fees include all DMV fees + a $10 counter fee. Payment methods accepted are cash, checks and credit/debit cards. Please note a 3.5% counter fee applies to total transaction amount if credit/debit card is used.

3. How do I register my bicycle with the police department?

Answer: There are two ways to register your bicycle. First you can stop in to our department and complete a registration form, pay the $1 fee and receive your license sticker. Second you can download the registration form on our website under the “Forms” tab. Once the form is completed you can either mail or drop off the form and the required $1 fee. A license sticker will be mailed to the address listed on the form. Please note that your bicycle’s serial number is required on the registration form.

Registering your bicycle increases your chances of recovering your bike if it is ever lost or stolen. When we recover or confiscate a bicycle, we check the serial number against our database. If there is a match we can return the bike to its rightful owner.

4. I received a traffic related citation or ordinance violation ticket from the West Salem Police Department. Can I pay the ticket via the phone or online?

Answer: Yes, but only if the citation is addressed to the “Coulee Region Joint Municipal Court.” Any citation that is addressed to the “La Crosse County Circuit Court” is not available to be paid online or the phone. If you look at your citation, the court information should be located near the top left of your citation. If you would like to pay your citation via the phone, using your credit/debit card, please call 888-604-7888. This service is available 24 hours a day.

If you would like to pay your ticket online, please visit www.governmentpayment.com

*Important* Whether you pay via phone or online, you must use code “2305” when asked. This number helps route your payment to the Coulee Region Joint Municipal Court (Onalaska Court). If you do not use this code when asked, the court will not have any record that you paid your fine. This could result in a default guilty judgment against you due to your lack of appearance and/or lack of payment and increased penalties.

Fees: Government Services charges a fee to utilize their service.
Phone Fee is: 4.75% of citation fine.
Online Fee is: 3.5% of citation fine.
